How to Feather in Photoshop

Want to give your image a professional look? Feathering might be just the thing you need to transform your work into a perfected, polished asset.

In this walkthrough, we’ll show you how to feather in Photoshop, so you can soften an image around the edges. This is a useful technique when creating a collage, or when you’d like an image to blend seamlessly into the background.

How to Feather Images in Photoshop

  • First, load your current Photoshop project and decide which image needs feathering. Select the Rectangular Marquee (or Elliptical Marquee) from the Tools panel, and draw a marquee around the section you’d like to keep. You can also use the Pen tool to draw a more precise path.
  • Then with your layer mask, go to “Select” > “Select a Mask”
  • A selection dialog box will appear, allowing you to set the Feather, Smooth, and Shift Edge Radius, which determines the edge’s softness. Experiment with these settings until you’re happy with the result.
  • Click “OK” when you’re happy with your changes.
