How to Export Vector to PDF in Photoshop

Because Photoshop is primarily a raster program, you cannot export a vector-based PDF. To preserve vector data, try this method instead.

Unfortunately, you cannot save a vector-based PDF in Photoshop. This is because Photoshop is primarily a raster program. You can, however, export the file to Illustrator, preserve the vector data, and still use the image for your printing or publishing needs.

Below is a step-by-step guide of what you need to do to export a vector to PDF in Photoshop.

Step 1: Create Vector Art in Photoshop

Create your vector artwork in Photoshop as normal, using the program’s Pen tool and Work Paths.

If you don’t know how to do this, get the full instructions on how to create vector artwork in Photoshop here.

Step 2: Export Paths to Illustrator

To preserve the vector data you just created, you’ll need to export the file to Illustrator. Here’s how:

  1. In Photoshop, go to File > Export > Paths to Illustrator.
  2. Choose which paths you’d like to export.
  3. Name your new Illustrator file and then click Save.

Your Photoshop file (PSD) will now be exported to Illustrator (AI) with the vector information separate from the raster information. You will be able to edit the vector layer with Illustrator’s tools.

Don’t forget to save the original file in Photoshop so you can go back and edit the image as needed.

Tips for Exporting Vectors from Photoshop

If you know you’re going to want to export a vector as a PDF so you can print it and use it in other materials, you should create or edit the image in Adobe Illustrator to begin with. Illustrator’s tools are much more equipped for vector manipulation and will prevent you from having to use the workaround above.
