How to Create a Facebook Cover Photo
1. Open Up Facebook Cover Preset Sizes
Before you do anything in the tool, it’s important to pick your Facebook cover size. You can do this two ways: Through Create’s webpage or inside the tool itself. First-timers will use the former.
On Create’s webpage, simply click Custom size to insert your specs or scroll until you find the Facebook option you seek.
If you’re already within the tool, simply click File > Create new > Blank Canvas, then scroll or search (CTRL or Command + F) “Facebook” to find your cover photo options.
If you know those specs by heart, you can also type them into the Create custom toolbar and click Make it! Otherwise, click on your canvas to open. Nice!
2. Choose or Upload an Image
Inside Create, click Images > Upload to select an image from your hard drive, or simply drag the image onto the canvas. You can also browse for an image from the Shutterstock collection using the same Images tab on the left toolbar.
If you draw from the Shutterstock library first, you’ll be asked to Download the image and license it. From there, you can either upload from within Create, or simply click Edit in Create to be taken right there.

Pro Tip: It’s important to have your canvas size set before you begin playing with images. Resizing the canvas once the image is fit to scale can be tricky. Once you upload the image to the canvas, you can drag-and-drop it to resize or adjust placement.
2. Adjust Specs for Facebook Cover Photo
If you do find yourself needing to make canvas sizing adjustments as you go, don’t sweat! Create‘s got two different ways to do that.
Option 1
Click Canvas edits > Resize canvas. Adjust your specs accordingly. Keep the link icon closed so that you don’t compromise the image quality. Click Apply.
Option 2
Cue. . .Smart Resize! Available to Pros, Smart Resize lets you adjust your design to match multiple outputs at once. Say you want your design to serve as your Facebook cover photo, Twitter banner, and Instagram post. No problem!
Click Smart Resize, select the outputs you need, then click Resize to apply it. You can also make it your own Custom Size as well. Neat, eh?
Add Shapes
To add a shape to your design, click Shapes and select your favorite, then drag to corners to resize it. You can change the fill color by clicking Change color.
This is a good time to use the Eyedropper Tool to ensure cohesive designs. Click the eyedropper icon next to the hex code box, then drag it to any color you want and release to set! We customized this color with that of the people’s faces.
3. Add Text
If you’d like to add text, simply click Text > Add headline or Add subheadline. There are some text layouts to choose from, or you can simply scroll through the countless font options.
I chose the font Libre Baskerville. Play around with color, placement, and letter spacing (from the top toolbar) to get the look you want.
Notice how this one font choice—one line regular, one line italicized—changes the entire focus of this design. Instantly, we’re here for business.
4. Add Finishing Touches, Like a Logo
To finish up the cover photo, I added the logo for this pretend company. That’s not essential, since the logo can also appear in your company page profile picture. To add your logo, click Images > Upload to find it, then drag-and-drop to position.
When you’re happy with the custom cover photo, click Download, select your preferred file type, then Download again. Alternatively, click Publish to upload straight to Facebook!
